Maurice, your life story reads like an epic novel, filled with twists and turns. Can you share with us a pivotal moment from your time serving in the United States Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom II that shaped who you are today?

“Well, if it’s going to be a novel, make sure it’s an epic one! There were so many moments during my service that I can think of at least six. How about two for now? In the middle of the Iraqi desert, my “roommate,” LCpl Chad Brown, came to me one day and said, ‘Hey man, I think you are sending your letters to the wrong address.’ Of course, my immediate reaction was, ‘Man, I know my address. Plus, if there were any issues, my wife would let me know.’ He explained to me that his wife told him Marine Corps Base Housing had moved all the families to new, upgraded houses three months prior. This was 2004, so I had to wait two days to get the satellite phone to call my wife and verify. My first question was, ‘Babe, what’s our address?’ She gave me the address that I knew. I asked a second time, with some extra BASS in my voice, ‘BABE, what is OUR ADDRESS?’ She proceeded to tell me the new, current address. ‘Why did I have to ask you that?! I have to come home eventually.’

Her: ‘Because I didn’t want you to know.’ It is safe to say that statement cut deep. not as deeply as what I found out when I got back. (Story for another time.) I don’t recall the rest of the conversation, just how I felt after. I began to question, Why am I here? Why am I fighting to protect my loved ones when the one person I love most couldn’t care if I came back or not? I walked back to my “tin can,” and right in the midst of my wallowing, the base was attacked. In that instant, I grabbed my M16A2, Kevlar, and flak and was boot to boot covering my sector of fire, ready to ROCK & MF ROLL! I forgot I was hurt; I forgot just 15 seconds prior that I wanted to give up; and I remembered who I was and that the people to my left and right need me here and now.

The lesson I took from this was, ‘If I can look past me and my moments, I’ll always find someone or something else to fight for.’

From battling homelessness in southern California to making a name for yourself in Hollywood, your journey is one of resilience and determination. What inspired you to keep pushing forward during the toughest times?

“Determination, delusion, and Rocky movies (1-4). By 2005, I had been married, in a war, divorced, and homeless. Somewhere in there, I became a rapper and shared the stage with Ja Rule, KISS, and Destiny’s Child. I believed that if I pressed on and endured the suffering, at the other end, there had to be a reward. Marine Corps boot camp is the longest and toughest of the 4 main branches of military service, and I made it through that. I went to Iraq, got bombed and shot at, and made it through that too. As long as I focus on the solutions, not the problems, and keep fighting until the end, I always seem to make it to the end in one piece.

As both an actor and musician, you’ve had diverse experiences in the entertainment industry. What has been the most rewarding aspect of pursuing your passions in Hollywood?

For me, the most rewarding aspect often lies in the opportunity to express my ideas and visions creatively and connect with audiences on a deep, empathetic, and emotional level. Whether it’s through a compelling character in a film or television show,. There is nothing like having fans of a show reach out to me via social media or come up to me and say how much they enjoyed what I do onscreen and how it made them feel. Or fancast me in roles they know I would be perfect for. Like the recent rumors of me playing Kang in the MCU! That was such love 😆! Also, I love having the chance to collaborate with talented individuals, from directors and actors to producers and musicians, for a shared artistic vision.

Your advocacy for mental health awareness, particularly within the veteran community, is commendable. How has your own journey with PTSD influenced your advocacy work, and what message do you hope to convey to others facing similar challenges?

The goal of advocacy is to create a more supportive and empathetic environment for veterans living with PTSD and set them on their path to recovery. Too many times, PTSD is depicted as psychotic, causing public fear and misunderstanding among war veterans, when most cases are not like what you are led to believe. We need everyone to know that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Remind them how important self-care is. Because only YOU know you best. You are not alone, and recovery is possible.

As a father, your love for your daughter shines through in your story. How has fatherhood impacted your approach to life and your career?

My daughter keeps me grounded in reality, reminding me that there is a real world outside of film and television. ‘Jr’ (my daughter) has also helped me book 95% of the network roles I’ve done. My career (and love life, lol) took an extended pause for a few years while I worked to raise her alone. My little girl makes me want to be a better man and a better actor, simply to make her proud to be my child.

In the face of adversity, you’ve managed to carve out a successful career for yourself. What advice would you give to others who are struggling to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams?

The path to success is rarely linear, and everyone faces obstacles along the way. Stay focused on your why and stay motivated and committed, even during the toughest times. By staying resilient, positive, and true to your goals, you can overcome adversity and create the life you envision for yourself.

What’s next?

Ask me tomorrow, and I promise I’ll tell you tomorrow. Well, there are several exciting projects on the horizon for me. I’m always looking for roles that challenge me creatively and allow me to continue growing as an artist. Right now, I’m in talks for a couple of potential film projects that have caught my interest. One is a gripping drama that delves into complex human emotions, while the other is a big-budget action thriller that promises to be an adrenaline rush. In addition to film, I’m also exploring opportunities in other areas of entertainment. I’m considering executive producing a television series that tackles important social issues between men and women in a thought-provoking way. And, of course, I’m continuing to collaborate with brands on endorsement deals that align with my values. Beyond my professional endeavors, I’m also focusing on personal growth and well-being. Whether it’s spending quality time with my family and friends, pursuing hobbies that bring me joy, or investing in self-care practices, maintaining balance in my life is essential. Overall, I’m excited about the future and the possibilities it holds. With each new project and opportunity, I’m committed to pushing myself creatively and making a positive impact both on and off-screen.
