Since last year music fans alike have been desperately waiting for Nicki Minaj’s next LP and just as we’re approaching June 10th, it looks like it will be pushed back even further. At this year’s Met Gala, Minaj dropped the name of her new album titled, “Queen” and it’s release date (June 10th) but just recently she announced via Instagram live that it will be pushed back until August 10th. She has yet to release a full body of work post ‘The Pink Print’ back in 2014, which explains the frustration of many fans and critics.

What’s the holdup? Why does she keep pushing the album back? What does this mean for her as far as momentum? These are all questions that are circulating through our brains despite the fact that the answer has been in plain sight this entire time, she’s stalling.

Since the beginning of last year, Minaj has been hinting at releasing her fourth album. If you take a moment to reflect and analyze her movements from 2017 to now, it’s not hard to tell that she’s been a bit apprehensive about releasing her album. The three tracks released after “Shether” weren’t just a Remy diss, in fact, they were singles for her next album and this is obvious because of the level of production put into the videos. These songs charted but did not connect to the masses in the way that her previous hits did. This is where the pressure began. Following the singles, she released a surplus of features throughout the entire year in order to gain a buzz. In her Run-Up feature with Major Lazer she said in one of her lines “bout to drop an album this is my fourth”, yet here we are over a year later with no album. After a catalog worth of features, she made another attempt at building momentum by disappearing for months and then popping up out of nowhere to do an interview with Zane Lowe where she released two new tracks (“Chun-Li” & “Barbie Tingz”) that were also supposed to be on the album. As stated previously, this is obvious because it appeared that the videos were heavily produced. And just as the three singles from the year before, neither compared to her typical chart racing standards.

Finally, here we are two weeks away from her claimed release date and she pushes the album back two months. Nicki has always been a cocky artist. Some love that and some can’t stand it but her fierce wordplay and big production are usually there to back up her controversial attitude. Without an album out she’s looking defenseless and there’s only so long that these features she’s putting out can hold her fans. My suggestion to Nicki would be to just trust her craft. She’s a very talented artist but being a successful female rapper is difficult. I feel that she’s in a place right now where she is struggling to trust her own input because of the criticism that she is facing from those that want her to fall. Everyone in Hip-hop knows that Nicki gets busy in the studio but that can easily be forgotten if you don’t have an up to date, solid, body of work. She just dropped another feature with YG, Big Sean, and 2 Chainz called “Big Bank” in which she completely snapped! This is the Nicki we want to see The hungry femcee from Queens who continues to push her pen after the ink dries. Bring that Nicki and the title of the album will speak for itself.
