Ashanti’s self-titled debut album was released more than 19 years ago, but she’s now planning to re-record the Grammy-winning album after obtaining her master’s. The New York singer shared the news and thanked her legal team for making it happen after signing her first agreement when she was a child during an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show on Tuesday (September 28).
“It’s so surreal,” Ashanti said. “I have an amazing legal team, and I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old, so understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re signing is so imperative. It’s so important nowadays. The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album, and put everything together.”
The popular hits “Baby,” “Happy,” and, “Foolish” are all on her eponymous triple platinum album. “It’s really humbling,” the 40-year-old said of attaining this independence. “It’s a great honor. I’m extremely appreciative. The fact that we are still here, that we are living through a pandemic, and that these blessings are still rolling in makes me so joyful, humbled, and a believer all over again. There is a greater power, and I believe that simply being a nice person, praying, and putting your heart into things allows you to reclaim that energy, which I believe is crucial. As a result, I’m really ecstatic.”
