Jackie’s Boy Interview on Voice It
Tiara – Tell me about growing up in Savannah, Georgia?
Jackie’s Boy – It was humble beginnings growing up in Savannah, we didn’t have a lot, we were poor, and as a child, I didn’t realize it at the time. My mom was a hard worker. She always instilled in me to work hard and told me if you wanted something in life, you have to go and get it.
Tiara – Tell me about your journey to becoming a Grammy award singer/ songwriter
Jackie’s Boy – The journey for me was putting in a lot of hard work. I started out singing on river street in Savannah, Georgia, then I went to Los Angeles and started singing at the Santa Monica Pier.
Tiara – How did you get started in writing songs for Chris Brown, Madonna, 50 cent, and other artists?
Jackie’s Boy – I was singing on the streets for 5 years and I got approached by an A&R from Atlantic Records. That’s what started everything, which put me on a path to win. They liked the songs that I wrote, so I started writing songs for other people, and an A&R from Atlantic records submitted them. It took me some time to be on that level, and luckily my songwriting ended up staying.
Tiara – What advice would you give the upcoming artist?
Jackie’s Boy – Consistency and accuracy determine winners from failures even through hard times. Always work hard on your craft.
Tiara – Tell me about your record label Big Circle Music Group?
Jackie’s Boy – It’s my first record label that’s designed to bring R&B back to the forefront. Me and my partner Darryl Johnson are very adamant about making sure that R&B gets the recognition that it deserves. It’s an all R&B record label that accepts different types of R&B genres. I am signed to the label, and Aunyae is another amazing artist that is signed to the label.
Tiara – What are some of the things you look for in an artist before you sign them to your record label?
Jackie’s Boy – I’m looking for uniqueness, someone that knows who they’re and don’t care about what people think. Comfortable in their skin, and that has flavor, style, and talent in R&B.
Tiara – Tell me about your project called The Black Chapter Vo.1, and what inspired you to write Sweet Melanin featuring Yanna?
Jackie’s Boy – It shows the diversity of the struggles and the triumph of black people in this country. I always say if American history was a book how would the Black Chapter sound. I believe that this project is a representation of that. I have my mother in mind, and many women like my mother, who is black and work hard. They don’t get their credit all the time, and black men, we need to uplift our women and encourage them to take on the world. In my verse, I talk about how other women get credit for things that black women have been doing since the beginning of time, so far as the curves and complexion. Women should love the assets of themselves. It’s an inner beauty that black women possess. They should never forget their light, and even if she did for a moment, hopefully, Sweet Melanin will give her that reassurance. Yanna is a dear friend of mine, and an amazing artist, the way that she wrote the song about black men was just another beautiful part of it.
Tiara – What keeps you motivated?
Jackie’s Boy – My kids and my wife keeps me motivated. When you look at your mortality and realize you will eventually leave this earth, you think about what you will leave behind. For me, I want to leave behind a legacy for my children. I want them to know that dad put in 110 percent of everything he does and that his music will hopefully live on for ages.
Tiara – How do you feel about racism, and how are you staying safe from COVID?
Jackie’s Boy – I haven’t had COVID, I did have a couple of friends that had it by the grace of God my friends survived it, so I’m grateful. Racism is something that has been going on for a long time. With COVID I feel like there will be a cure. With racism, I’m not sure, with my project Black Chapter was a representation of that, as a black man, I have to speak even when it’s hard to, or people don’t want to hear it, I still have to use my voice.
Tiara – How does it feel to have 12 #1 Records and albums?
Jackie’s Boy – I remember there were moments when me and my youngest brother was sleeping in my car. We have done a lot of music together, and we depended on each other a lot. I’m gracious and humbled that God blessed me this far. Me and my brother had a duo group called Jackie Boyz. We went on a lot of tours, and we wrote some amazing records together. He contributes to some of those 12 # 1 records. We went our separate ways, but he still makes music as well.
Tiara – You have a visual that will be releasing soon with Shawn Stockman from Boyz ll Men?
Jackie’s Boy – Working with him in the studio was amazing. We connected through Instagram. It was a dream come true to have a song with him. This new video is so great I can’t wait for you guys to see it.
Tiara – What else will you be working on soon?
Jackie’s Boy – I just finished a Christmas project 2 days ago, so I’m releasing a Christmas EP, which will have 3 songs. I wanted to write something that gives an R&B feel. The songs are about heartbreak and heartache at Christmas. The project will be releasing on November 28th, and in, January I will be doing another EP.
